Broken ankle treatment

When a patient goes through a broken ankle, different methods of treatment may be available depending upon the circumstances. The type of fracture, severity, and other factors may lead to different options being possible, or more preferred. Below are some general details about several kinds of treatment selections:

Cast

A cast is generally made of a cotton bandage with plaster of paris, or more recently another form is made of synthetic materials and polyurethane. A lower extremity cast is the classification for the type that would be used on a broken ankle. More particularly, it may be a type such as a short leg cast, which merely covers the lower leg along with the foot.

Crutches

When an individual receives an injury below his waist, crutches may be used. By making use of crutches, the person can gain stability that may be lost due to, for instance, inability to put weight on a leg. Additionally, more normal movement is allowed, as the patient can walk on one leg, while holding himself up with the the crutches when that leg is off of the ground.

Splint

In order to immobilize in broken ankle bone, a splint may be employed. It can be used to hold the bone together or against a joint. In doing so, the splint can be used as a mechanism to make transportation of the individual safer - for example to a hospital.

Ice and elevation

This is actually a partial list of the four-part method: rest, ice, compression, elevation (with the acronym R.I.C.E. commonly being mentioned). The injured area should be rested, and ice applied to it, with compression via a pressure bandage applied, and then the area is elevated above the heart's level.

Proper treatment

At-home treatment is not recommended for a broken ankle. Seek out qualified medical assistance from someone who can diagnose and treat the condition properly. In some cases, the above methods may not be sufficient, and surgery may be required.
